After first hit, second movie in park nears

HARLINGEN — It will take a lot to top the first screening of Movies in the Park, “Moana,” which was shown at Lozano Plaza early this month.

But city officials are going to give it a go.

“Moana” was the first of three free family movies shown al fresco by the city. It brought out an estimated crowd of 200 to 250 on the weekend before the Fourth of July, as families spread out on lawn chairs and blankets to watch the movie at the downtown park.

“I think for the first one, it went really well,” Lara Di Paolo, recreation supervisor for the Parks and Recreation Department, said at a meeting of the department’s board yesterday at Tony Butler Golf Course

The second of three free family films is set for July 28 at around 8:30 p.m. when the original 1990 “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” will be shown right on the Butler course.

The free movie event will be shown just behind the clubhouse on the driving range. Two berms in the tee areas there will provide a natural stadium seating effect for families to set up their lawn chairs or spread out their blankets.

Concessions will be available, too.

“It’s really cool that my family just absolutely loved it,” Eddie Medlin, director of golf at the city course, said of “Moana.”

“It was a real good time and we really look forward to having it here,” he said of the next film.

Parks and Recreation officials said a portable movie screen would be available thanks to Texas State Technical College for the “Ninja Turtles” show.

“We’re very lucky because we now have a full screen thanks to TSTC,” Parks supervisor Jeff Lyssy told the board.

The third movie in the parks and rec trilogy this summer will be “Finding Dory,” and the showing will be at McKelvey Park on Aug. 18. It also will be free.
