BROWNSVILLE — Federal agents say they seized more than a quarter-million dollars in cocaine from the car of a San Benito woman accused of trying to smuggle the narcotics into the United States.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the B&M International Bridge in Brownsville discovered the cocaine Tuesday when they ordered the 22-year-old woman to undergo a secondary inspection of her black 2009 Hyundai Sonata.
Officers say that once the vehicle was put through an imaging machine, they found 15 packages of cocaine hidden within the sedan. The cocaine weighed 36.24 pounds and had a street value of $279,480.
“This seizure was the result of the diligence with which our officers perform their duties,” said Port Director Petra Horne, Brownsville Port of Entry.
CBP officers seized the drugs and the car. The San Benito woman was taken into the custody of Homeland Security Investigations special agents.
