Feds: Man arrested after cocaine found

A Mexican National remains in federal custody after authorities accused him of trying to smuggle more than 20 pounds of cocaine into the United States.

Authorities said the incident occurred June 29 at the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, the 41-year-old Matamoros man drove up to the international bridge in a 2008 Saturn Vue. He was referred to a secondary inspection area for a further examination.

Authorities said that with the help of a K9 unit, the officers found eight packages hidden inside the vehicle that contained what was believed to be 20.41 pounds of cocaine.

The estimated street value of the drugs is $157,420.

Authorities report the drugs and vehicle were seized. The driver was turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigation agents for further investigation.
