RGV Vixens set for pre-playoff contest vs Warhawks

HARLINGEN — While most IWFA Division II teams in the area are taking the weekend off to prepare for their upcoming first-round playoff games next weekend, the RGV Vixens will not have that same luxury heading into tonight’s contest against the Laredo Lady Warhawks.

The game was originally scheduled earlier in the season, however due to inclement weather the game had to be rescheduled to today.

“We work hard at practice Monday through Friday because we want to be No. 1,” said Alyssa Flores. “I don’t think having to play this week is going to affect us because we put in a lot of work. I think we might put in a lot more work than any other team out there.

“I think we’ve grown a lot from day one. We go to practice every day and do whatever we have to do to get to the point where are today. We want to be first. We want to get those rings at the end of the season.”

Sitting atop of the IWFA Division II standings with a record of 5-1, the Vixens are in control of their own destiny and there’s not much any other team can do about it.

This season the Vixens have defeated the Weslaco Jaguars 78-47, the San Benito Clovers 46-20, the STX Phoenix 74-26, the Dynasty 50-0 and the RGV Dolls 40-12.

Regardless of tonight’s outcome, the Vixens will enter the playoffs as the No.1 seed in DII and will face the SWTX Mockingjays next week.

Here’s how the Division II playoff bracket currently looks: No.1 seed RGV Vixens vs. No. 8 SWTX Mockingjays; No. 2 Rockport Her-ricanes vs. No. 7 Laredo Lady Warhawks; No. 3 Weslaco Jaguars vs. No. 6 RGV Dolls; and No.4 RGV Clovers vs. No.5 STX Phoenix.

Should the Warhawks score more than 20 points tonight against the Vixens, they would move up from the seventh seed into the sixth spot and face the Weslaco Jaguars.
