How sweet 16 it is: Lady Hawks, Lady Cats set for fourth round of softball playoffs

As the state softball playoffs enter their fourth week, the Harlingen South Lady Hawks and Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats remain very much in the mix.

On Saturday, the Lady Hawks overcame a 0-1 deficit against South San Antonio to advance to the Region IV-6A semifinal against San Antonio Brennan.

The Lady Green Birds return to Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi for a third straight week to take on the Lady Bears in a best-of-three series.

Game 1 is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Game 2 begins at noon on Saturday and Game 3, if one is necessary, will begin 30 minutes after Game 2.

Meanwhile, the Rio Hondo also had to rally in their Class 3A regional quarterfinal series in order to move on in the postseason.

After dropping the first game of the series 3-2 in eight innings, the Lady Cats won consecutive games Friday and Saturday to take the series 2-1.

The Lady Bobcats are now in the fourth round of the playoffs for the first time in program history. Bianca Cruz’s grand slam in Game 3 sealed the series win.

The Lady Bobcats bats came alive in the final two games winning 11-2 in Game 2 and 10-4 in the series finale.

“I am extremely proud of the team’s effort; we played aggressive and showed a ton of intensity,” said Rio Hondo coach Brett Esparza. “The loss in Game 1 tested our mentality, but our selfless team’s effort is what allowed us to prevail.”

Up next of the Lady Cats is a best-of-three series against Wimberley at Sinton High School.

Game 1 is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Game 2 begins at 5 p.m. Saturday and Game 3, if needed, begins 30 minutes following the second game.

END OF THE LINE: Lyford’s magical season came to an end this past weekend as Kingsville Santa Gretrudis completed a two-game Class 3A regional quarterfinal sweep against the Lady Bulldogs.

Lyford fell in Game 1 by a score of 7-0 and 6-2 in Game 2.

Despite the disappointing loss, the Lady Bulldogs’ future looks bright as they will return plenty of their key starters next season.
