Harlingen’s Nadia Flores is no stranger to receiving accolades.
During the 2014-2015 season, the then freshman earned the District 32-6A Newcomer of The Year award for her breakout performance and as a sophomore she was named to the 32-6A all-district second team.
Now as a junior, Flores earned her way on to the all-district first team and, more importantly, was named the Valley Morning Star’s All-STAR Most Valuable Player award.
“It feels really good because I’ve worked really hard to be here,” said Flores. “It feels good but at the same time I know there’s always room for improvement and that’s what I keep in my mind.
“I just got to work hard this offseason for next year and lead my team further than we did this year.”
This season, Flores led her team to a 26-12 overall record and a 12-2 district mark. In the postseason Flores led the Lady Cardinals to a 48-37 victory over PSJA Memorial in the bi-district round before eventually losing to Laredo Alexander in the area round. Nevertheless, Flores still managed to score 19 points in the game.
In total, Flores scored 306 total points, pulled down 125 rebounds, had 29 assists, 41 steals and blocked the ball 38 times.
“Nadia is that player that has your back through thick and thin,” said Harlingen head coach Ashley Moncivaiz. “Since her freshman year to her junior year she’s worked at it no matter what, but when the time comes and you need her to perform she’s always there for her teammates. She not the type to be in peoples faces but she is just the type of player going to commit and when her teammates need her.
“To me that’s what you need in an MVP player, someone you can rely on to be out there and perform when the team needs someone to whether it’s on defense or offense or just get a major rebound. She might not want that gratitude because she never asks for anything but as long as she gets that win for her team to her that is all that matters because it’s about the team first.”
