Journalism and bias

Ruben Navarrette’s commentary recently was very interesting and hit on a couple of important points.

He mentions the left-wing media and their cozying up to liberals.

He closes with journalist apparently becoming combatants against our current president and that when they do that they stop being journalists. I could not agree more.

I also agree that any time journalists allows their biases to cloud their reporting they are stepping further and further away from the truth. This is not a conservative or liberal issue.

This is a struggle that journalists engage in daily to get to the truth. As long as journalists are human beings there will be bias.

That is one reason that it is important now, more than ever, to support our journalists and their quest for the truth.

The freedom of the press is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

In some countries journalists risk their lives as they report the news. Since 2000 more than 100 journalists have been murdered or disappeared in Mexico.

We may not always agree with what is reported but we must rely on varied sources for our news, which includes a variety of news outlets including newspapers in our own quest for the truth.

The Society for Professional Journalists has a code of ethics. The Preamble to its Code of Ethics states: “… Public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist’s credibility.”—— https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Journalism_ethics_and_standards You have already taken a critical step towards getting closer to the truth by reading this newspaper.
