San Benito selects Valley company as city engineer

SAN BENITO — A Harlingen engineering firm will take on the duties of city engineer here.

After a two month search, city commissioners have selected Brown, Leal & Associates to work under a contract.

Commissioners on Tuesday met in closed session before announcing the selection.

The firm will replace Victor Gutierrez and the Corpus Christi-based firm Coym, Rehmet & Gutierrez, which closed their local offices after working with the city since 2009.

Commissioners selected Brown, Leal & Associates to provide engineering services on an “as-needed” basis, City spokeswoman Martha McClain said in a statement.

Brown, Leal & Associates, a firm founded about 40 years ago, includes Jack Brown, a former Cameron County engineer.

The firm has worked for Cameron County, the cities of Harlingen and Brownsville, the Port Isabel-San Benito Navigation District, the Port of Harlingen, the Port Mansfield Navigation District, the North Alamo Water Supply Corp., Harlingen WaterWorks, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board and county drainage districts.
