More environmental stories needed

As a regular and loyal reader of the Valley Morning Star, I have noticed and appreciated the many editorial changes that have occurred over the past several years.

The paper’s articles on our local K-12 and post secondary schools and issues pertaining to health and wellness serve the community and reflect its activities. Photos of the “Community at Play” and stories about chess are also positive.

Local sports coverage is complemented with national sports stories.

What is missing, in my view, is any regular attention to the environment.

It used to be that the Star’s weather page often featured a story about nature or the environment. That was a natural fit.

Flip to the back page for the weather and learn something about agriculture, climate, birds, animals or ecology at the same time.

I hope that the Star can find a way to restore and reinvigorate its environmental coverage.

In addition to using wire service stories, perhaps a reporter could be assigned to explore nature stories especially relevant to Valley readers.

Because while some of us are news junkies and others are sports fans, we all have an interest and a stake in the natural world.
