Pavers being sold for San Benito war memorial

If you’re interested in honoring a loved one who served in the U.S. military, the Veterans Advisory Board in San Benito is selling engraved commemorative brick pavers that will be installed at the San Benito Veterans War Memorial.

The bricks must be purchased by May 19 so they can be created in time for the Memorial Day Silent March and Ceremony to be held May 29.

The pavers cost $100 each and the money raised goes toward the purchase of black granite markers that will have the names of those killed in action and missing in action, and for an additional bronze statue.

“Many people have bought the pavers to honor their loved ones, and some Veterans have bought them themselves in support of the local War Memorial,” said board chairman Victor Garza.

The downtown memorial features a bronze statue commemorating World War II veterans and another honoring Korean War veterans. Plans call for a third bronze statue that will feature an American eagle carrying an olive branch.

To buy a brick you can call Garza at (956) 399-7464, Martha McClain at (956) 361-3804 Ext. 301, or visit the San Benito Municipal Building at 401 N. Sam Houston.
