South’s Reyes earns All-STAR rookie honor, Moreno named top coach

There was probably no player that entertained the crowd during the 2016-2017 season more than Harlingen South’s Karla Reyes.

Her ball-handling skills dazzled the Lady Hawks fans while her sharp shooting abilities created a nightmare scenario for opposing coaches.

In the end, the freshman garnered respect from coaches as she was named the District 32-6A Newcomer of the Year and is also the Valley Morning Star’s All-STAR top rookie.

Reyes lit the net on fire during her frosh campaign racking up 329 points in 34 games and a 9.7 points per game average. She also brought down 131 total rebounds and had 93 assists, 86 steals and 12 blocks in her first season as a Lady Hawk.

COACH OF THE YEAR: This years VMS All-STAR Coach of The Year is none other than San Benito’s Abel Moreno, who led the Lady Greyhounds to 25-13 overall record including a Class 6A bi-district victory over Edinburg High. And in the area round, the Lady ’Hounds almost defeated a tough Laredo United team.

“I am honored to be selected as the All-STAR Coach of The Year,” said Moreno. “It is very difficult to compete in District 32-6A. Not only is the district very talented but so are the coaches of each school consequently making it imperative I prepare for each game. I think we all push each other and in doing so not only make our athletes better but do a phenomenal job of promoting the game of basketball.

“This is my 16th year coaching girls basketball and 13th as head coach, and I have been able to see the game evolve as well as see how well the players have evolved.”

Moreno was also thankful for his support staff and his assistant coaches.

“I have been blessed with a great support staff at San Benito including the athletic administration and my assistants have helped me push the program and helped me reach my goals,” said Moreno. “They deserve as much recognition as I do.”
