Remembering Nahomi: Family, friends set 5K run/walk

SAN BENITO — In the face of tragedy, a community has come together.

Nahomi Rodriguez’s family has gained an immense amount of support from various parts of the community.

Again, members of the community are encouraged to come together Saturday in support during a 5K run/walk.

For a $10 donation, the community will be able to show their support for Nahomi and her family who have been hit with the tragic loss of her passing.

Participants are asked to wear blue, Nahomi’s favorite color.

All the proceeds will be given directly to the family to help pay for funeral expenses.

Event organizers will also raffle off some prizes donated by local businesses.

Go Fund Me pages also have been set up to raise money. The family does qualify to receive some violent crime funding through the state and that is currently in the process.

However, it is unknown when and how much money the family will receive.

Two weeks ago, Nahomi’s remains were found in Rio Hondo. The 19-year-old had been missing since July 2016 following her late night shift at the McDonald’s in Harlingen.

It appeared she left with someone she knew, but she never made it home.

Because of the publicity of her disappearance, family, friends and the community have been invited to say their goodbyes to the San Benito teenager at a memorial April 29 starting at 5 p.m. The memorial will be held at Cross Church in San Benito.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a note, poem or a memory to leave for Nahomi.

These items will be placed in her casket.

Nahomi’s remains were sent to the state for further testing and are expected to be there for several months.

Based on the major evidence found at the scene, Police Chief Jeffry Adickes said Nahomi could have died the night she disappeared in July or several months ago. Police are confident that the amount of evidence will tell them more.

The night she went missing, a McDonald’s surveillance camera captured her inside the restaurant drive-through window filling a cup with soda before she fist bumped with what appears to be an older man in a grey SUV in the drive through.

Nahomi was last seen wearing her McDonald’s uniform of a black shirt, black pants and a black cap.
