The City of Brownsville Public Health and Wellness Department has received a $15,311 grant to help with mosquito control.

The grant was awarded from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to fund the Pro-Mist, a state-of-the-art high performance sprayer.

Officials say the grant provides the city’s Vector Control Division inspectors the ability to mount the sprayer on utility vehicles to conduct adult mosquito spraying throughout the city’s hike and bike train network, parks and other facilities.

The Vector Control Division is charged with monitoring and controlling mosquitos that are capable of harboring or transmitting vector-borne diseases such as Zika, Dengue fever and West Nile fever.
