HARLINGEN — Renowned New Mexico artist Eric Luplow will be bringing more of his edgy art work into town for everyone to view.
Luplow is the artist who painted the Day of the Dead mural in Downtown Harlingen.
His work is a smash of surrealism and folk art that draws many collectors to his exhibitions.
Luplow will also be in Harlingen with a group of out-of-town artists who are coming to participate in Downtown Harlingen’s Art Night and the following Market Days event next weekend.
The Art Night guest artists’ weekend will focus on the Luplow exhibition.
“The downtown Art Night and Market Days attract people from the Valley and around the state,” said Edward Meza, Harlingen Downtown manager. “It’s very important for tourism, and the city’s economy.”
On Thursday, Steve Wood, who is part of the group, will be presenting the history of recumbent bicycles and tricycles at the Palm Garden RV Park and Market Days on Saturday.
“I call my watercolor paintings ‘Sur-Folk’ because they are a collision between surrealism and folk art,” Luplow said. “My paintings are my way of seeing things put down on paper.”
He said he starts each painting with a pencil drawing and then spends quite a bit of time deciding what color each part should be.
“Two techniques I use most often are dry brush and glazing. Subject matter, use of color and multiple techniques ensure that each painting is one of a kind,” Luplow said.
