HARLINGEN — When the Harlingen South Hawks step onto the field at Boggus Stadium tonight at 8:30 against Edinburg North, they will do so knowing that they are just the fourth team in school history to make it to the postseason, with the last being in 2011.
And given that the team ended the season on a positive note, the Hawks enter tonight’s Class 6A bi-district playoff match with plenty of spirit.
“They’re feeling confident and the practices went very well all week,” said Harlingen South head boys soccer coach Julian Ramos. “I told them that it’s not going to be an easy game because they’re (Edinburg North) the district champions for a reason. But we know what we are in for and we’ll see how we play, but if we come out firing on all cylinders then we should be OK.
“We ended the season on a positive note because we did what we had to do and got better each game. I think we got stronger and stronger as the season continued, but you want to get hot toward the end of the season and that’s what we did. We got hot when it mattered.”
However, while the team might be happy to have reached playoffs, the Hawks are far from being content. As Ramos explained, making the playoffs was just the team’s first goal.
“Our first goal was just making the playoffs and we accomplished that, now the bigger question was what kind of team do they want to be,” he said. “Do they want to be a team that is content with just making the playoffs or is it about what kind of mark do the seniors want to leave, what is going to be their legacy?”
The winner between Harlingen South and Edinburg North will face Laredo LBJ in the area round.
DOUBLEHEADER AT BOGGUS: Just before the Hawks’ boys team takes the field, the Harlingen South Lady Hawks will also play at Boggus Stadium at 6 p.m. in a Class 6A bi-district match.
The Lady Hawks will host Edinburg Vela, which finished as the third seed from District 31-6A with a record of 9-5.
Harlingen South finished the regular season with a record 12-2 in District 32-6A.
The winner between the two takes on the winner between San Antonio Southwest and La Joya High.
