NEAR EDINBURG — Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers discovered nearly a ton of marijuana during a traffic stop over the weekend.
Nearly 2,000 pounds of marijuana was discovered just after noon Saturday when a DPS trooper pulled over a man headed north in a tractor trailer on U.S. 281, according to a news release.
Officials said a DPS trooper pulled over Juan Carlos Sandoval, who was driving a tractor trailer northbound, for an undisclosed traffic violation near U.S. Highway 281 and Farm-To-Market Road 2812.
Upon inspection of the vehicle the trooper discovered 80 bundles of marijuana concealed inside boxes, the release states.
The marijuana weighed 1,954 pounds, and has a street value of more than $11 million, the release states.
The 36-year-old Houston man was arrested for felony possession of marijuana and booked into the county jail where he remains on a $150,000 bond, jail records show.
If convicted of the charge, a second-degree felony, Sandoval faces between two and 20 years in prison.
