Heat Wave show kicks off on South Padre Island

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Car lovers are not going to want to miss this.

Cool cars tricked out with a custom twist will be on display this weekend.

A candy apple red Chevy Impala might not be the only car raising up and down or bouncing.

And Ice Cube’s Today was a Good Day won’t be the only hit song people are going to hear blasting out of car audio systems people dream about.

The perennial car show M&M Off Road Spring Break Jam is a Custom Truck, Car and Audio event and Tattoo Expo that brings custom car contests to the Island.

There will be car and truck burnout contest, hydraulic contest, audio competition, bikini contests and live music on the Island.

Hundreds of cool cars and trucks will be on display at the annual car show hosted by Heat Wave at the Island’s convention center.

There will be trucks larger than life, cars with switches and sound systems with bombastic bass for any music lover to admire.

“We’re expecting 500 to 600 cars,” said David McDonald, event organizer.

The custom cars and trucks will take up the entire property and if that’s not enough, a tattoo expo with 16 artists will be tagging people with the ink they always wanted.

Vendors will also be on site during the two-day show that runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

The day pass is $20 or the weekend pass can be purchased for $25 and kids under 12 years old get in free.

Exotic cars and trucks will be coming from all over Texas and Mexico to participate in the car show.

Organizers expect 3,000 to 5,000 people to attend the two-day event.

“We’re going to get a lot of imports and Jeeps because they have totally changed the way they build vehicles,” McDonald said.
