SAN BENITO — The investigation continues into a late Monday night fire that broke out in a funeral home that’s become a downtown landmark.
Yesterday, the Thomae-Garza Funeral Home was closed and its telephone lines remained down as directors tried to assess damages.
The funeral home planned to resume business, according to a statement released at 2:09 a.m. yesterday.
“We are currently working in restoring the damages so we can continue to operate and serve our loving families during their time of need,” the statement said.
Funeral Director Albert Vega could not be reached for comment yesterday.
The San Benito Fire Department, with help from the Harlingen and Brownsville fire departments, arrived at the funeral home at 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd. about 9:29 p.m. Monday, city spokeswoman Martha McClain said in a press release.
Firefighters remained on the scene until after 2 a.m. yesterday.
There were no injuries.
The funeral home requested residents contact Vega at 956-399-1331 regarding funeral services and arrangements.
The funeral home has been a downtown landmark since the 1950s, when the Thomae family operated it as one of the area’s largest funeral homes.
