HARLINGEN — As a faith-based event, the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast aims to help those in need.
By joining in prayer for one morning, event organizers try to do just that.
Community members are encouraged to attend the annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast March. 9.
The event is free and open to the public and gives the community an opportunity to come together in prayer and fellowship, regardless of religion or faith traditions.
It will take place from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
The annual event is supported entirely by private donations and is not affiliated with the city of Harlingen or any particular church or organization. It is coordinated by an independent group of volunteers.
Tickets can be picked up at First Community Bank, 806 South 77 Sunshine Strip, and Texas Regional Bank, 2019 South 77 Sunshine Strip, in Harlingen. Lobby hours for both banks are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.
Proceeds from several sponsors of the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will be donated to the Family Crisis Center this year, said Kathy Wolf, a planning committee member.
“The amount varies from year to year, depending on the amount we raise,” she said.
Established in 1981 by volunteers, the Family Crisis Center provides services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Their services include a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter for victims and their children, crisis intervention, advocacy, hospital accompaniment, transportation, counseling, legal advocacy, law enforcement assistance, protective orders, court accompaniment and other educational programs.
The committee discusses the event beneficiary early in the planning process every year.
“In past years, we’ve given donations to a variety of organizations. This year, we had a committee member who felt very strongly about selecting a nonprofit with a positive influence on family dynamics, ultimately benefiting the children in the family,” said Wolf.
