Search for suspects underway after shooting left 2 dead

NEAR DONNA — Investigators with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s office have named one suspect in connection with the shooting deaths of two people.

Officials issued an arrest warrant for Isai Varela, 27, in connection with the shooting deaths of Jose Alfredo Zuniga, and Felicia Solis.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call for shots fired at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday at an apartment complex in the 8400 block of Alberta Road in rural Donna, the release states.

When deputies arrived they found an adult woman outside an apartment — dead from at least one gunshot wound — and an adult man inside the apartment suffering from gunshot wounds as well, officials said in the release.

Zuniga was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of injuries suffered, officials said.

Officials said Zuniga was 30 years old. Solis, of Donna, was 26.

Just after noon sheriff’s officials confirmed a search of a residence in Alamo on Anacua Street related to the homicide investigation but officials did not find anyone, sheriff’s spokesman J.P. Rodriguez said.

Officials said at the time of the shooting two children, ages 3 and 6, were inside the apartment but were not injured in the incident.

By early afternoon Friday, family and friends posted thoughts of remembrance for the pair on different social media accounts.
