RAYMONDVILLE — After 10 years on the job, Willacy County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace George Solis is retiring.
Solis, whose term expires in December 2018, said two years of budget cuts helped him decide to leave office early.
“It’s time to go. Ten years is enough,” said Solis, whose last day is Feb. 17. “I did the best I could with the tools they gave me.”
Solis, who was first elected in 2006, twice won re-election as Precinct 2’s justice of the peace.
“I worked hard. I’m real proud of my tenure,” said Solis, who turns 65 next month. “It’s time to give somebody else a chance. I know there are a lot of qualified people who can do the job.”
Solis said yesterday, he’s considering running for political office but declined to disclose details of what post he may seek.
“I want to be able to expand my horizons,” Solis said. “I want to continue to help the community.”
For months, Solis has complained of budget cuts he argued made it harder to preside over the county’s largest precinct.
About 18 months ago, he said, Willacy County commissioners slashed about 60 percent of his budget.
Then last year, commissioners moved his office from Fourth Street to the county’s Third Street annex, he said.
Solis complained of lack of security at his new office.
“No promised security measures have been completed,” Solis said.
