Longtime incumbents seek re-election

RAYMONDVILLE — Two longtime incumbents remain unchallenged after filing for re-election to the city commission.

In the May 6 election, two of five commission seats are up for grabs.

So far, Clifton Smith and Zeke Cavazos are the lone candidates, City Secretary Delma Garza said yesterday.

Smith, a photographer and fishing guide first elected in 1989, has filed for re-election to Place 3.

Cavazos, a retired schoolteacher first elected in 2001, has filed for the Place 4 seat.

Mayor Gilbert Gonzales said other residents have expressed interest in challenging Smith and Cavazos.

“There are a couple of people interested in running but they could back out,” Gonzales said. “We just have to wait.”

Filing deadline is Feb. 17.

Early voting will run from April 24 to May 2.
