Testimony gets underway in Torres capital murder trial

“Rats die.”

These were the first words spoken by Cameron County Assistant District Attorney Noemi Garcia in her opening statement in the capital murder case of Ruben Torres.

Torres is accused of killing his 13-year-old girlfriend Abigail Estrada in 2007.

The state is contending that Torres killed Estrada because she gave information to the Harlingen police department about a drive-by shooting allegedly committed by Torres while Abigail was driving the vehicle.

Prosecutors claim Estrada’s brother, Jimmy, and two other men were also in the car at the time.
