Murder trial to begin for boyfriend

HARLINGEN — Ruben Torres, a Harlingen man accused of the kidnapping and death of his girlfriend, Abigail Estrada, is finally scheduled for trial Monday.

Estrada disappeared in 2007 at the age of 13. Torres, her boyfriend and a 16-year old minor at the time, was the last person seen with Abigail.

Torres initially was accused in her disappearance, but charges were dropped against him for lack of evidence and the case went cold for several years.

But in August of 2015, the Cameron County district attorney and Harlingen police felt they had enough evidence to charge Torres with Estrada’s murder, and he was arrested.

In December of 2015, a grand jury indicted Torres and charged him with capital murder and murder. Torres has remained in the Cameron County Jail without bond and is facing capital murder charges.

Estrada’s body is still missing, and she is presumed dead. Torres, now 26 and charged as an adult, has pleaded not guilty.

Torres’ trial will begin Monday in the 103rd state District Court before Judge Janet Leal.
