Harbor Freight preps for new location on Ed Carey

HARLINGEN — Harbor Freight Tools is gearing up for the Harlingen market.

The national discount tool and equipment retailer has filed documents with the state for a $444,000 renovation of the old Kellogg Motors location at 215 N. Ed Carey Drive next to the Charlie Clark used car lot.

Plans for the Harbor Freight location include exterior and interior renovations of the stand-alone property.

Harbor Freight has embarked upon an aggressive expansion, and claims to be opening three new locations a week throughout the United State already. It has locations in McAllen and Brownsville.

Such a store locating pattern is a familiar one for Harlingen. It has been common for major companies to initially locate stores in McAllen and Brownsville before siting a location here once those stores prove profitable.

Harbor Freight Tools is a privately held discount tool and equipment retailer headquartered in Calabasas, California, and operates a chain of retail stores as well as a mail-order and eCommerce business.

The company has over 700 stores in 47 states and employs more than 17,000 people in the United States.

The property is being sold by the Southern Commercial Real Estate Group of Harlingen.

Calls and emails for comment from the real estate brokers, as well as Harbor Freight Tools, were not returned.
