Getting into shape: School strives to promote health and wellness

Dr. Raul Garza, Jr. Elementary recently hosted its first annual Health Fair. The goal of the health fair was to provide the community with health care opportunities, medical and dental advice, and emphasize the importance of healthy eating habits.

“Health and service organizations provided our community with information to help improve their health and stay healthy,” said Elsa Lambert, Principal of Dr. Raul Garza, Jr. Elementary.

Parents, students, and campus and district personnel participated in activities such as a 1-mile walk, Zumba demonstration, interactive booths, free flu shots, and blood pressure readings. The San Benito CISD Child Nutrition Program provided healthy salsa and chips.

Among the numerous health and service organizations that participated in the health fair by providing community members with information to help improve their health and stay healthy were the following:

– A Optical;

– Best Optical of America;

– City of San Benito (“Tu Salud ¡Sí Cuenta!”);

– Dr. Iris Barrera, DDS;

– IAA Insurance Advisor Agency;

– Jericho Health Services, Inc.;

– Planned Parenthood;

– Rodeo Dental;

– San Benito Fire Department;

– San Benito Police Department;

– Su Clínica Familiar;

– Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service;

– The Fitness Zone;

– The Red Cross;

– The Soccer House;

– The University of Texas (UT) Health Mobile; and

– Walgreens.

“A million thanks to absolutely everyone who made this possible – from the volunteer organizations and staff members to our students and parents,” added Lambert, indicating that members of the school district’s After School Program and Parental Involvement Program were instrumental in making the event a success.
