Local man charged in sisters deaths

HARLINGEN — A 30-year-old Harlingen man faces two counts of criminally negligent homicide stemming from a car crash that killed two Pharr sisters.

Michael Escobedo was in the Hidalgo County Jail after the crash that killed Maricela Reyes, 40, and Maribel Reyes, 30, on FM 490 east of Hargill about 7:40 a.m. Saturday, Sgt. Maria Montalvo, a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said in a statement.

Montalvo said Escobedo was driving southbound in a 2016 Toyota truck when he failed to negotiate a turn at a curve, entering the northbound lane before hitting the left side of a 2014 Nissan Sentra.

The Reyes sisters, who were riding in the Nissan’s back seat, were pronounced dead at area hospitals.

The driver of the Nissan was treated for minor injuries at Knapp Medical Center.

The case was under investigation.
