Woman charged in stabbing

RAYMONDVILLE — A 55-year-old Raymondville woman has been charged in the stabbing of a woman left for dead at the side a country road.

Margie Castro Mendoza is being held on $100,000 bail after she turned herself in to the Willacy County Jail in connection with the stabbing of Gracie Cantu-Ledesma, 41, of Raymondville, found near Sebastian on Aug. 26.

Justice of the Peace George Solis arraigned Castro Mendoza on charges of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

On Thursday, Solis ordered her brother Albert Mendoza, 50, held on $1.25 million bail following his arrest Wednesday.

Solis also arraigned Mendoza on charges of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

Investigator Danny Solis declined to disclose any details in the case.

At about 7:30 a.m. Aug. 26, a motorist found Cantu-Ledesma on the side of FM 2629, about three miles east of U.S. 77 near Sebastian. She was unconscious, stabbed more than 12 times, including a wound to her throat.

Danny Solis said Cantu-Ledesma “was recovering” after her release from a local hospital in September.

The Sheriff’s Office has worked with the Texas Rangers and the U.S. Marshals Service on the case.

“It’s a joint investigation — has been from the beginning,” Sheriff Larry Spence said. “We needed their expertise and manpower.”
