LOS FRESNOS — What appears to have started as a domestic dispute ended with the wife fatally shot.
Police said a Los Fresnos couple got into a physical altercation before Erika Sandate, 34, was shot in the chest.
Sandate, a paraprofessional at Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy in Harlingen, died at a Brownsville hospital on Monday.
Her husband, Joel Sandate, 28, a police officer for the Los Fresnos school district, has been interviewed by Los Fresnos police and Texas Rangers.
No charges have been filed.
According to a Los Fresnos police press release, the couple had gotten into a domestic dispute at their Los Fresnos home Monday evening.
Police and emergency medical technicians arrived at the home in the 400 block of West Fifth Street about 5:45 p.m. after receiving a 911 call for help.
Los Fresnos police were assisted by the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office and Texas Rangers.
No further information was available about the investigation by press time.
