RAYMONDVILLE — A 17-year-old Raymondville teen was being held on $150,000 bail in the Willacy County Jail in connection with a stabbing that put a 15-year-old Lyford boy in the hospital.
Judge Armin Martinez arraigned Juan Mendez on five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon stemming from the Oct. 27 stabbing, Sheriff Larry Spence said.
Lyford Police Chief Andres Maldonado said Mendez is accused of stabbing the 15-year-old Raymondville boy in the back during a fight outside a home on Chapote Street in Lyford.
The boy was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, where he was released the next day, Maldonado said.
Maldonado said a 13-year-old Raymondville boy was charged with assault causing bodily injury in connection with the alleged stabbing. The boy was released to his parents’ custody.
The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Mendez outside his Raymondville home on West Fox Street on Tuesday, Maldonado said.
Maldonado said Mendez’s charges stem from the alleged stabbing and also from allegations of brandishing a gun.
“The gun was never used,” he said.
Maldonado said other arrests are pending.
Authorities continue to search for a motive.
“It involved several juveniles,” Maldonado said. “There were four people from Raymondville who went to Lyford to fight four people from Lyford.”
