$3M water plant upgrade planned

SAN BENITO — About two years after they shut down a new $17.9 million water plant, officials are planning a $3 million overhaul of the city’s 90-year-old plant.

The two-phased plan is expected to help the plant operate for about 20 years, officials said.

“We are making the best decision possible in investing in an upgrade,” Mayor Celeste Sanchez said. “Regardless of any other factors, we have determined that we have a solid plan using the latest engineering standards and we feel confident that these improvements are in the best interest of the city of San Benito.”

As part of the plan’s first phase, the city will buy a $165,000 triplex backwash pump system package, city spokeswoman Martha McClain said in a statement.

The plan’s second phase will include an adjusted design plan, a supervisory control and data acquisition system, an automation control system and expanded chemical treatment containers.
