Rangerville students participate in mock election

This year, local students participated in a mock presidential election, exercising their right to vote – a right that defines our nation as a democracy.

“Monster Needs Your Vote,” a children’s story by Paul Czajak, encompasses a playful and fun-filled campaign that encourages children to take a stand and fight for what they believe in. It also illustrates the complexity of being a candidate.

The story prepared Rangerville Elementary students to participate in the largest national mock election in United States history.

Each student, with their voter registration card in hand, cast their online vote in the Responsibility Foundation and Studies Weekly’s “Every Kid Votes!” mock 2016 presidential election.

“Our Kids Vote Campaign was a huge success!” proudly announced Rangerville Elementary Principal Diana Atkinson.

“’Monster Needs Your Vote’ introduced our students to the importance of character, the democratic process, and carrying out their civic duty of voting,” she explained.

Ultimately, the students of Rangerville Elementary helped elect Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States of America.

The campus and national elections yielded the following mock election returns:

• Hillary Clinton – 203 campus votes (378,730 national votes = 48.6%);

• Donald Trump – 55 campus votes (291,373 national votes = 36.5%);

• Jill Stein – 14 campus votes (58,610 national votes = 7.3%); and

• Gary Johnson – 11 campus votes (58,464 national votes = 7.3%).

Candid quotes from some of the young voters included the following: “I hope Hillary Clinton wins so that my mom can give me twenty dollars,” “I hope I didn’t vote for the mean one,” and “I am so nervous!”

Needless to say, students are already looking forward to the 2020 campaign.
