50 tables, one goal: Table decorating event to raise money, help fight cancer

HARLINGEN — It’s table decorating time again to raise money to fight cancer.

“We call it 50 tables, one goal, end cancer now,” said Kim Kibler, Dining By Design publicist.

Kibler said the slogan is representative of “where we want to go this year.”

Dining by Design, a local organization, is one of American Cancer Society’s premier events that has raised close to half a million dollars over the course of the organization’s effort to fight cancer by designing tables.

Last year there were tables both large and small.

Tables were themed like Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, different periods of American culture and technically detailed and elaborate designs.

All the styled tables and each seat is sold for the cause.

The dinner annually draws in 1,000.

Last year’s event raised more than $70,000 for the local cancer society.

The previous year, the group raised $68,000, and it just keeps getting bigger and better every year.

All proceeds and financial contributions go the American Cancer Society.

Their first event took place in 2001.

“The Valley is very supportive of this event and we are fortunate,” Kibler said. “We are expecting 50 or more tables this year.”

Dining by Design will be hosting its 13th annual event to fight cancer on Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Casa de Amistad in Harlingen.

“We are extremely excited because we have a new ingredient and secret to expose this year,” Kibler said. “Our new special ingredient is Chef Nena Siller and she is going to be our star chef for the event.”
