South Texas ISD’s board vice president was appointed as an officer for the Texas Association of School Boards during the association’s 2024 Delegate Assembly on Sept. 28 in San Antonio.

Sylvia Sánchez Garza is serving as TASB’s secretary-treasurer, a news release stated, adding that she is a 2012 Leadership TASB graduate and master trustee.

Established in 1949, TASB is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan, statewide educational association aimed at serving local school boards across the state, and is the largest group of publicly elected officials with more than 7,000 school board trustees, its website states.

Sánchez Garza has been involved with STISD for years, serving on the district’s board since 2008 and the Education Foundation of South Texas ISD since 2004. STISD’s Board of Directors is the largest school board in the nation with 24 members from Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties.

The news release credits Sánchez Garza as being active in the community by serving on the South Texas Literacy Coalition Board and being the co-founder of the annual Mayor Joe V. Sanchez Memorial Book Festival. She is also a member of the Mexican American School Boards Association and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

She also holds a doctorate in leadership studies from Our Lady of the Lake University’s School of Business and Leadership, a master’s in educational administration from Lamar University, a master’s in creative writing and a bachelor’s in English from the University of Texas–Pan American, the release noted.

Sánchez Garza has authored three books, which have won several literary awards, and is featured in three anthologies, the release stated. She is a member of the Authors Guild, Texas Authors and the Writer’s League of Texas.
