A 47-year-old San Juan woman has been indicted for intoxicated manslaughter after she allegedly lost control of her vehicle, causing her passenger to be ejected and crushing him beneath the vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Norma Araceli Munoz was indicted for the death of 51-year-old Gerardo Medina after she allegedly lost control of her vehicle, causing it to roll over, killing her passenger, and is set to be arraigned next Wednesday.

At about 8:43 p.m. on March 12, 2023, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Caesar Chavez Road south of Minnesota Road outside the San Juan city limits, according to the affidavit.

Upon their arrival, the trooper saw a silver Chevrolet Silverado on the east side of the roadway on its top.

He then came upon Medina’s body whose head was underneath the cab of the truck.

Further investigation revealed that the Silverado was traveling south on Caesar Chavez Road when Munoz lost control of the truck, causing it to leave the roadway and roll over, according to the document.

“The passenger was ejected from the vehicle and the vehicle came to rest on the passenger’s head,” the affidavit said.

When Munoz was interviewed, she admitted to being the driver of the truck and stated she consumed about 10 Michelob Ultra beers before the crash.

Due to her statements, a Standard Field Sobriety Test was conducted on Munoz.

“During this test, six clues were observed,” the affidavit said. “N. Munoz consented to a preliminary portable breath test which depicts a Blood Alcohol Concentration over the legal limit of 8.08.”

Munoz was charged with intoxicated manslaughter with a motor vehicle and was given a bond of $5,000. She was released the following day, according to jail records.
