Thanks to a seasoned quarterback, the Brownsville St. Jopseh Bloodhounds are 2-0 so far this season and turning heads.
Meanwhile, the Rio Hondo Bobcats are 1-1 but gave state powerhouse Sinton all it could handle in Week 1 and beat Class 6A La Joya Juarez-Lincon this past weekend, 27-14.
On Friday, the two teams face off in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium in Rio Hondo.
Against the Huskies, the Bobcats’ offense put up 348 total yards. Junior quarterback Tyler Bush was solid as he threw for 153 yards on 8 of 11 passing for and a score, He also rushed for 116 yards on 11 carries.
As for the Bloodhounds, who are ranked No. 10 in the Valley, their offense has accounted for 94 points in their two wins. In Week 1 they pouned Grulla 64-25 and last Friday they roughed up Lyford 30-7.
At the heart of SJA’s offensive attack is junior quarterback Kai Money, who has already thrown for more than 370 yards and five TDs and rushed for more than 400 yards and four more scores.
Friday’s battle should be quite a matchup.
In other key games this weekend, Harlingen South looks to improve to 3-0 when they travel to Edinburg North for another Thursday night game. Last Thursday, the Hawks held off PSJA High 35-27.
On Friday, the top-ranked San Benito Greyhounds also look to up their record to 3-0 when they host No. 8 McAllen Memorial. The ’Hounds are coming off an impressive 48-28 win over San Antonio East Central last week while the Mustangs fell to Weslaco East in overtime, 37-29.
Finally, the No. 3 Harlingen Cardinals look to bounce back from a tough 30-13 home loss against Laredo United South as they travel to San Antonio on Friday to take on Reagan, which has beaten them the past two seasons.
