Taking on a bigger Challenge: High school students take advantage of dual enrollment classes

A total of 192 participating San Benito High School successfully completed a total of 355 college credit courses, for a total of 1,047 college credit hours over the course of nine weeks this past summer, according to the district’s Higher Education Coordinator Sandra Ruiz.

“The students in ’rising’ grades 10-12 had the opportunity to participate in summer dual enrollment coursework at the San Benito High School campus in partnership with Texas A&M University-Kingsville as part of the Summer 2016 Dual Enrollment Academy,” Ruiz said.

Classes were held Monday thru Thursday, with a morning session and an afternoon session each day and classes running for 4-and-a-half weeks each.

Students had the opportunity to enroll in the following courses over the course of both Summer Session I (June 6 – July 6) and Summer Session II (July 7 – Aug. 5), taking advantage of the following courses: English Composition I and II, US History I and II, Government I and II, Elementary Spanish I and II, Speech, Psychology, College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Art History.

Based on average tuition costs at Texas public colleges for three credit hours, students are able to save up to $1,100 in college tuition for each dual enrollment course completed. Students who participated in the Summer 2016 Dual Enrollment Academy completed anywhere from three to 12 college credit hours each.

Each course a student successfully completed will grant the student high school credit in addition to three core college credit hours from Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK).

“All courses offered are part of the TAMUK academic core curriculum and are fully transferable to any public college or university in Texas,” Ruiz said.

In addition to the benefit of potential financial savings for each participating student, dual enrollment coursework eases a student’s transition to college-level coursework and college expectations, increasing postsecondary success for participating students.
