Abandoned Mercedes apartment complex renovated

MERCEDES — Before it became an eyesore for the city, it was once a luxury apartment complex. But that was in the 1950s.

Now, it has been renovated and will soon bring more life into downtown.

The longtime apartment complex known as the Bagdad Apartments took new ownership last year, underwent a makeover from the inside and even got a new name — Mercedes Courtyard Apartments.

“It’s not a big complex, but there are 20 units,” said Hernan Gonzalez, Mercedes Economic Development Corporation executive director. “Some are single and double bedroom apartments.

“The apartments are going to make Mercedes more attractive,” Gonzalez said. “And there are a lot of people relocating to this area and Mercedes is a good location for them to live.”

He called the apartments the perfect location for young working professionals.

Gonzalez said the Raybec Group from Chicago has invested more than $1 million in the apartment complex renovation. The developers bought the property on the open market.

“The developers liked the building complex because of its solid structure and style,” Gonzalez said. “The apartments will be very affordable and it’s a great lactation.”
