RAYMONDVILLE — Officials will dip into cash reserves to balance Willacy County’s new general fund budget. But this year, county commissioners won’t have to lay off employees, County Judge Aurelio Guerra said.
“As far as drastic cuts, we’re not going to do anything like that,” Guerra said.
He said officials have not determined the amount of money they will take from the cash reserve fund, projected to be $3.7 million by the close of the fiscal year Sept. 30.
Officials plan to boost cash reserves when the Willacy County Correctional Center’s insurance policy pays $443,000 in business interruption insurance, Guerra said.
Since last year, he said, the prison’s insurance has agreed to cover about four months’ worth of about $2.7 million in annual revenue.
Business interruption insurance covers revenue losses for up to a year, he said.
So Guerra expects the county to receive more insurance payments during the upcoming fiscal year.
But officials don’t know when they will receive the money.
“We are expecting more, absolutely,” Guerra said.
