HARLINGEN — City leaders are deciding whether to focus efforts on 17 projects throughout Harlingen they feel would improve the community and benefit residents.
In a meeting tomorrow, city commissioners will consider pulling the projects out of a 10-year plan and placing them on a priority list.
In June, commissioners, along with Jesse Robles, chairman of the Harlingen Community Development Board, selected the projects out of the new 150-page 10-year plan called One Vision, One Harlingen Comprehensive Plan.
Among the list of projects commissioners want to work on immediately are the $14.8 million convention center and the proposed $4.5 million renovation of the Baxter Building.
Last month, commissioners entered into an agreement to build the 43,700-square-foot convention center on eight acres off Teege and Brazil roads near Bass Pro Shops in the Harlingen Heights business district.
Other proposed priorities include a $2.15 million project to pave Commerce Street from Taft Avenue to North Business 77, turning Lon C. Hill Park into a “destination park,” improving Harlingen Field so it comes a major event venue and developing all-inclusive playgrounds focusing on special needs children at Fair Park and Victor Park.
