The Harlingen school district said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that its former superintendent will not be paid for the remaining two years left on his contract.

J.A. Gonzalez, who was the top administrator at the Harlingen school district for one year, resigned in early September five months after receiving a $10,000 raise that bumped his salary to $310,000 a year.

“The Agreement ensures fiscal responsibility amid a challenging financial environment. The former Superintendent had a three-year contract that if paid in full would have exceeded a million dollars,” the statement read. “By accepting his resignation, the District is no longer obligated to pay the final two years of this contract.”

The school board said in the statement that it believes the agreement is in the best interest of staff, students and the community.

The statement also says the Finance and Planning Committee, which formed shortly before Gonzalez’s resignation, met for a second time on Tuesday to discuss expenditures in the last fiscal year.

“Many of these expenditures were beyond the approved budget and occurred without adequate communication to the Board,” the statement read.

The statement also references financial challenges facing the Halirngen district and school districts across the state of Texas.
