SAN BENITO — All that sits behind Fire Station No. 1 on South Sam Houston is a grassy, undeveloped lot.
That will soon change.
Because of a $494,755 grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, it will become the future home of South Park.
“Parks and the amenities that come with parks are vital to a community’s self-concept and well-being,” Mayor Celeste Sanchez said.
“I am proud of our city and its citizens in their use and love of parks. It is with great pleasure that we work diligently to have the best for our children and citizens. It is my wish that everyone enjoy and take care of this park.”
The new park will consist of soccer fields, a half-mile multi-use trail, restrooms, bleachers, picnic tables, barbecue pits, trash receptacles and parking, said San Benito Parks and Recreation Director Art Garza.
The community will be able to use the trail for walking, jogging and biking.
The first phase of infrastructure will begin within the next six months. The second phase, which will include the ball fields, will follow with an estimated completion date of early 2018.
