New Port Isabel police chief changes his mind, turns down job

PORT ISABEL – Port Isabel Police Chief Wally Gonzalez has agreed to stay on duty until a new successor can hired to take over his duties.

Gonzalez announced his retirement last month and Port Isabel City Manager Jared Hockema named retired Texas Ranger Tony David as the new chief.

But earlier today David informed the city he will not be able to assume the position due to personal obligations. David has been the Laguna Vista police chief.

“I have no problems whatsoever continuing as police chief, I love my town,” Gonzalez said. “I just wish my health could be a little bit better.”

Gonzalez’s retirement is effective in October. However, he will be on medical leave and taking advantage of the vacation time he has accrued.
