Port Mansfield East Cut fishing accident victim identified

PORT MANSFIELD — Authorities have identified a man believed to have died in a fishing accident.

Police continue to investigate the death of Tyler Johnson, 21, of Port Lavaca, pronounced dead Saturday morning, Police Chief David Mayes said yesterday.

Mays said he is awaiting an autopsy report to determine the cause of death.

Authorities believe Johnson fell onto rocks as he fished at the edge of the jetties near Port Mansfield’s East Cut, Mayes said.

After the fall, Mayes said, Johnson is believed to have plunged into the water.

Johnson’s friend tried to give him cpr, Mays said.

Justice of the Peace George Solis, who pronounced Johnson dead, said he appeared to have suffered a gash to the back of the head.

Froth appeared on Johnson’s mouth, indicating he may have drowned, Solis said.

Officials said Johnson and his friend arrived in the area after traveling south along the South Padre Island National Seashore.
