HARLINGEN –The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat alert for Cameron and Willacy counties for this afternoon.
Coastal temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90s, with inland temperatures 100 or higher, and will be coupled with high dew points and high relative humidity.
Heat index readings between 111 and 115 degrees are expected.
The heat advisory, issued when temperature and humidity are combined, will be in effect from noon today until 6 p.m.
Farther up the Valley, the Brownsville station of the weather service has issued an excessive heat warning for McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr, Mission and Weslaco.
The heat index in these cities will range from 112 to 118 degrees from noon to 6 p.m.
The weather service urges anyone who must be outside this afternoon take extra precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Children, the elderly and pets are at special risk, the weather service says.
