La Feria assesses longtime city manager

LA FERIA — City commissioners were in closed session last night discussing the performance of longtime City Manager Sunny Philip.

Residents crowded the council chambers in a show of support for Philip.

Philip was on the agenda for a performance evaluation conducted by an outside attorney hired by the City Commission.

Members of the community gathered in solidarity before the meeting to pray for Philip and the decision-making of the commissioners.

The commissioners, along with Philip, were still in executive session late last night.

On July 7, Mayor Pro Tem Esmeralda Lozano and Commissioner Julian Guevara Jr. included items on the agenda involving the performance evaluation and to consider appropriate action, if any.

“They have decided to seek outside council to evaluate the performance of the city manager,” Philip said.

Philip said new commissioners have come on board and they have the right to review his performance.

The evaluation was led by Rick Navarro of Denton Navarro Rocha Hyde and Zech P.C. The law firm represents government bodies and public agencies throughout Texas.

An administrative source said the legal council cost the city $200 an hour and was estimated at $4,000 for complete services.
