Tuesday night accident shuts down Highway 83

LA FERIA — Tuesday evening traffic was backed up for a couple of hours as law enforcement cleared away an accident involving a Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle.

At about 5 p.m. on U.S. 83 one mile east of FM 733, a Texas DPS trooper traveling east along the expressway stopped in the eastbound lane to remove some debris that had apparently fallen from another vehicle.

While he was out of his vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler hit a grey Ford F150 after failing to reduce its speed.

The jeep then hit the truck which hit the DPS vehicle stopped in the eastbound lane with its emergency lights on.

The trooper did not suffer any injuries.

The driver and passenger of the truck were transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

Due to the debris and situation, the highway was closed temporarily.

To prevent further accidents, DPS Sergeant Maria Montalvo said anyone who sees debris in the middle of expressway or any road is encouraged to call local authorities.

For those who are transporting items in vehicles, Montalvo said they should be properly secured.

DPS will stop drivers who fail to properly secure their loads in vehicles. Drivers will also be cited.
