Test drive a car for a cause

HARLINGEN —The Harlingen Police Department has partnered with Safe Riders of Texas and Bert Ogden Motors-Harlingen for a “Test Drive Event.”

Proceeds from the event will go toward National Night Out “America’s Night out Against Crime” 33rd Anniversary.

National Night Out provides unique opportunities for the city of Harlingen to join forces with thousands of other communities across the country in promoting cooperative, police-community crime prevention efforts.

A representative from Bert Ogden said the goal is to raise about $3,000 for the event.

The department plays a vital role in assisting the National Night Out groups through joint crime, drug and violence prevention efforts.

For the last several years, the department has hosted National Night Out.

During the event, officers from all around the Valley come together to spread the word and encourage safe communities.

Officers pass out literature, kids play, and people eat.

Started by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984, the National Night Out events promote involvement in crime-prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and responding.

National Night Out now involves more than 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases.

Drivers who want to test drive the new Chrysler, Kia, Hyundai and many other 2016-17 models are encouraged to bring with them a driver’s license and must be at least 21 years old, the representative said.
