RIO HONDO — Nick Uresti and his friend Jose Garza have been painting and cleaning up the community park learning center as summer youth program city employees.
“It keeps me involved with my city and the hours are real good because I can do stuff in the afternoon after work,” said Uresti, 17, a Rio Hondo High senior.
For the last two weeks eight high school students have been helping out around city hall, cleaning up the city and working on projects the city needs done.
The students are being paid minimum wage. Four of them start work at 8 a.m. and are busy until lunch. A second group of four students takes over the afternoon shift from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“I saw a flyer for the job at Mike’s Grocery and my friend Joey was going to apply for the job so I applied too,” Uresti said.
Uresti said the job was perfect for him. He clocks into work in the morning, does his work for the city and gets out at noon everyday. He called it the perfect job for him.
“It’s been fun and it helps me out by keeping me busy over the summer,” said Joey Garza, 17, another Rio Hondo High student. “It teaches me about the responsibility of having a job.”
