LYFORD — Residents are getting a big chance to clean up their yards.
Today, the city will hold a community cleanup drive at the city yard, 13550 Main Ave., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Around town, trash isn’t a big problem, Police Chief Andres Maldonado said yesterday.
But Maldonado said old tires litter many yards.
“We’ve had community cleanups in the past but it’s been a while,” City Secretary Lydia Moreno said.
Storms can even turn junk into deadly projectiles.
“Hurricane season is here and residents need to clean up any debris they might have,” Moreno said.
Maldonado said too many residents have failed to get rid of their old tires.
“They’re not disposing of them properly,” Maldonado said. “They’re keeping them at their residence.”
Maldonado warned old tires can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
“With the mosquito problem we might have, we want to take care of that,” he said.
The city will charge $1 to dispose of car tires and $2 for truck tires.
The operation also gives residents a chance to get rid of construction material.
